Notes about Preparation for the exhibitionÂ
To prepare for the exhibition of Mark's sculpture I have vacuumed, washed with dish soap and water and a little bleach to clean the works, then re-hot glued pieces that were loose or had fallen apart. Some works were in his kitchen and became covered in cooking oil, so I used rubbing alcohol. Also, the loft had a grease drip from the floor above and I used paint thinner to clean those works.
I was asked if the work I am presenting is a collaboration between Mark and myself. The answer if NO but I have had to make some guess about how the work went together since my photos of his work were meant as reference photos.
In order to be able to present these sculptures I had to clean them and re-hot glue them. Most had loose parts. I discovered that he took apart and reused pieces from early pieces. He was also very frugal with the hot glue. I have had a bit of a heavier hand with the hot glue gun.
The following pictures are the state of pieces when he died. He left one book of slides taken by Nick Waltzer in 1989 and I relied heavily on those very clean professional slides for many of the surviving works. The other photo's were taken at various points of renovation and many of the works were filthy. I photographed them institu and just bagged them in plastic.
